What is the CMC Portfolio?
The CoinMarketCap Portfolio is a tool designed to track all your cryptocurrency investments in one place. If you have investments in cryptocurrencies, you have likely bought them from multiple sources: perhaps you purchased BTC on Coinbase, BNB on Binance, and then acquired various other coins or tokens on different exchanges.
Keeping track of all your coins and tokens can become challenging when they are spread across various platforms, or when you simply can’t remember how much you have and where you’ve stored them!
Losing control over your cryptocurrency investments can potentially lead to unexpected losses or missing the best time to sell. Therefore, a good tool to help you organize everything is essential.
Since July 2021, CoinMarketCap users can create multiple portfolios to track different coins! CoinMarketCap has developed the Portfolio tool, which allows users to keep records of all their cryptocurrency investments. There’s no longer a need to consolidate everything into cumbersome spreadsheets. The Portfolio tool provides real-time analysis of changes in the aggregate value of your assets, calculates profits and losses based on CMC’s data and methodology.
It’s important to note that CoinMarketCap does NOT hold your funds, as you do not transfer money to CoinMarketCap. You enter your transaction data manually. The platform simply stores these records and provides analysis for you. Rest assured, CoinMarketCap will not touch your funds at all!
How to Use the CMC Portfolio
Before you can set up a Portfolio on our site, you need to have a CMC account and be logged in, as we need to associate the data with your personal account. If you haven’t registered yet, simply go to the registration page and follow the instructions to create a new account. If you already have a CMC account, head over to the login page and enter your email address and password.
Once logged in, locate “Portfolio” on the navigation bar. To get started, click on “Create Your Portfolio.”
Select the coin or token you want to add to your portfolio here.
Steps to Create a CMC Portfolio
Step 1: Add a “Buy” or “Transfer In” Transaction
When you start investing, the initial step is to record the funds you have acquired. If your first action is purchasing cryptocurrency, select the “Buy” transaction in this window. You can enter the amount of coins bought, the price per coin at the time of purchase, the date and time of the purchase, the transaction fee, and any notes related to this transaction.
We automatically fill in the price based on the current moment when you open this window, but you can modify the price if needed. Adding notes can be particularly useful—for example, you can record which exchange the cryptocurrency was bought from, so you know where to go when you decide to sell!
You can also add a “Transfer In” transaction on the “Transfer” tab. Here, you record funds transferred to you as a gift from a friend or family member, salary from your employer, or for any other reason. Similarly, you enter the amount received, adjust the time if needed, note any fees, and add any remarks that will help you remember the details of this transaction!
Brief Description of the Three Tabs:
- Buy: Any transaction indicating that you are purchasing a certain amount of assets.
- Sell: Any transaction indicating that you are selling a certain amount of assets.
- Transfer: Any transaction where you are transferring assets in or out. Initial values do not need to be filled in for this action.
Step 2: Navigate to the Portfolio Main Page
Congratulations, you have completed the first step in creating your own portfolio! You will now be taken to the main portfolio page. For example, let’s assume we’ve added a purchase of 0.01 BTC at a price of $51,000 on February 17, 2021.
Here you can see:
- Your Current Balance: An overview of the total value of your portfolio.
- Charts: Visual representations of your portfolio’s performance over time.
- Summary: A detailed breakdown of your assets and their respective performances.
In addition to the current balance and charts, you can also view:
- Balance Over Time: A graph showing how your portfolio’s balance has changed over different time periods.
- Distribution: This tab helps you evaluate the proportion of each asset in your portfolio, allowing you to see the distribution of your investments.
Suppose an additional purchase of Ethereum was made at $593 USD on December 2, 2020. Currently, the portfolio comprises 79.24% Bitcoin and 20.76% Ethereum. The allocation adjusts dynamically with the current asset prices; thus, an increase in BTC’s price would raise its share within the overall portfolio.
Note: Whenever a new transaction is added or an existing one is edited, the value chart and distribution diagram require some time to update.
Summary Investment Statistics
Under the “Statistics” tab, users can access an overview of their investments. This section provides a summary of total profits or losses from crypto assets and the percentage gains or losses since the assets were acquired. It enables users to assess the performance of individual assets based on profitability and loss metrics.
Your assets:
On the right-hand side of the page, you’ll find a list of all coins and tokens you’ve added to this portfolio, along with relevant data.
Here you can see the current price of each asset, the percentage change in price over the last 24 hours, the total value in your chosen currency and the original currency, as well as the profit and loss for each asset. In this menu, you can add new transactions using the “+” icon on the right or click on “…” to view transaction details or remove the entire asset from your portfolio.
Clicking on the coin’s name will take you to a detailed page about the coin itself, while clicking on other data will direct you to the transaction details page.
Want to add a new asset or transaction record? Simply click on “+ Add New” and follow the same steps as described above!
Transaction Details with Asset:
Clicking on an asset’s row, such as Bitcoin in my case, will lead you to the transaction details page.
Here, you will see your Bitcoin balance based on the current price, changes over the last 24 hours, total profit and loss, as well as a list of your Bitcoin transactions. Additionally, you can edit transaction details or delete any unwanted transactions.
Privacy mode also operates here; simply click on the eye icon!
